I bought the boat helping a buddy out and I know nothing about them I just want to get it in the water so any help on finding out what outdrive I can use would be great. The boat is a 1986 sea ray with a 5.7 inboard the "transom plate" says OMC. I was wondering if a mercruiser outdrive would work as a bolt on? Or if I got a whole mercruiser assembly off of another boat including the trans plate, and outdrive could it work? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Used OMC Drives are available, if you take the time to look. You may get a good one; and you may not. However, if you're going to replace an OMC drive, the easiest way to go is with an OMC conversion kit and drive from SEI. You can check out there web site HERE. Doing it that way would bypass all the complications you may have with motor mounts, transom hole, etc.

In any case, replacing an OMC drive is not going to be a quick, cheap thing to do. So, you may want to do an objective look at the rest of the boat to see if it's really worth it.
Cheers!

SO there's no real Interchangable outdrive that I can pick up anywhere? Like mercruisers 260 or 868 I can get either one of those from the transom back to the prop

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,..... You have an OMC,... Not a Mercruiser....

What makes you think an outdrive from 1 manufacturer, would fit on a housing from a Different manufacturer,..??

OMC has been Outa Business for over a decade....
You need a drive, for a V8, for an 86, 'n up OMC...
Or,...
As noted above, you can now buy an Adapter to mount a Merc Alpha, Gen.II on yer housing...
Then you'd need a Merc. Alpha, Gen.II, with a 1.50:1 gear ratio....

The 260 drive, 'n 898 drives are to Old to fit the adapter plate...

I can get a full outdrive off of another boat that had a 350 in it but has a mercruiser outdrive 868 or I can get a full 260. That's why I was asking if I COULD change them out. I'm not looking to spend thousands on a new replacement outdrive.

Ayuh,.... In order to do That,....

You'll need to swap Everything from the Pulleys to the Prop......

What yer askin' to do is like wantin' to put 435 Detroit pistons in a 185 Cummins....

They just Ain't made to go Together.......

the SEI kit is the best deal, imo.... but you have to get the drive from SEI at the same time as the conversion kit. They do a couple of mods to the drive for it to work with the adaptor. You can't just bolt any GenII drive on and go. and you can not use Gen 1 alphas.

If you don't want to spend thousands, watch your local kijiji or craigslist for a Cobra drive for a V8 and be quick with cash, and be prepared to inspect it when you get there (pressure/vac tester, check propshaft for bends, etc). Many people are looking for the same thing as you and lots of broken junk out there for sale.

The best thing about the SEI kit: when you go to sell the boat you can put "Mercruiser Outdrive" in the ad honestly.
