Honing a cylinder and grit values.

My recent 3hp Evinrude power head rebuild attempt that ended due to one cylinder having severe damage due to rust pitting (honing would not have helped the cylinder) brought up a question.

If the rings have to be replaced on a piston and honing of the cylinder is carefully done to break the carbon gaze and allow the new ring set to seat better, what grit number should be use to hone the cylinder??

The Flex hone ball system has many different git values.

I was wondering anyone had some good advice for future reference.

Thanks!

I tend to go with the 180-220 flex hone, for about 10 to 15 seconds, then I use a 400 - 600 cloth hand sand not saying its what is supposed to be done just what I have done with ok results, might have just got lucky.

the fine cloth is not a bad idea, I would think it would knock off any fine burrs. I think most people use the 180 to start then a gentle hit with a set of 240-280 stones.
