I have been trying to crank my 1978 80hp Mercury Outboard Serial # 5004079. At first I thought it might be a fuel related problem but come to find out I'm not getting any fire to all four cylindrers. The compression test checked out fine. I just got a multimeter and DVA Adapter. Can anyone please tell me what I need to check out first. I'm not sure if it's the Stator, Trigger, Coils, Switchbox or something else. I'm not sure if this model has a distributor or not. The motor is turning over good but just not firing up at all. No Spark. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Here is a link to the condensed version of the Clymer manual which will help you out. That engine s/n does not have a distributor and you can double check this on page 275. The go to page 278 and find the testing for the Thunderbolt without distributor.

Let the page load for 20 seconds and then download soonest to your compter as the link is short lived.

Re: 1978 80hp Mercury No Fire To Cylinders! Need Help!

I checked my battery with my multimeter and got around 12.6 volts. I checked the red wire on the switch box and did not come up with any voltage reading. I backed tracked and checked the solenoid and rectifier and they both had 12.6 volts going to them. I believe the rectifier is not sending any power up to the stator then down to the switch box. I guess it might be a bad rectifier. I did do all the other test on the coils, trigger and stator and they seem to be fine if I read them right. Any suggestions.
