150 xr2 foot gears problem

After in use all day I put the boat in reverse and it started popping/clinking sound real loud. I put it in forward and the noise went away. Later that day when I loaded the boat it didn't make the noise in reverse. Did the gears in my foot break/grind off? It was fully in gear when it was making this noise. Is this a linkage problem or should I pull the foot off and inspect the gears? Thanks for your help and info.

Justin, not sure, but I think there are special tools needed to get into the gears. Start by checking for filings in the gear oil. A SMALL amount is not unusual. If it's alot, you probably need the shop

Yea iam going to try to get it apart today and inspect it do you know if a 1995 150 foot will bolt on i found a good used one?
