To check the oil pump to see if the shift plunger is stuck in it, you have to disassemble the g/c.

You said the clutch dog moves freely? It's supposed to be spring loaded to forward gear.

Whoa, you have started dis-assembling the gearcase? Are you telling us that the piston is not stuck in the oil pump? If it isn't, then you probably are heading in the wrong direction.

Just exactly what kind and how, tests did you make before tearing it down? When you checked the voltages at the blue and green wires, were they still connected, or disconnected? And did you check it by jumping the wires directly to the battery?

Anyhow, the most common causes of no shift are:

Electrical, especially the push button switch

Correct oil, any water in it? Dirty? These will result in the piston sticking in the pump.

BY FAR, the most common is that push button switch, followed by crud and grit in the oil causing a stuck piston. Proper diagnosing before repairing is critical.

type c premium blend .I changed it after i replaced the water pump.I tested the solenoid at both the shift box and straight from the battery neither would get it to shift when motor was running.I checked the voltage on the wires coming from the shift control both was correct 12 volts. the clutch dog is spring loaded i just meant to say not stuck,

We are not saying the clutch dog might be stuck, we are talking about the PISTON IN THE OIL PUMP. Is it stuck?? You say you have the manual, so you should be able to see what piston we are talking about. It is the part that moves the clutch dog.

A common problem was a lack of hydraulic pressure required to move the clutch dog to the neutral and the reverse positions. Many times debris clogged the brass screen on the front of the hydraulic pump. You have to remove it to clean the screen and also check the condition of the pump, piston o-ring, and the relief valve.
