I have the lower unit off to replace the water pump. I noticed what seems like excess play between the drive shaft and the prop shaft. When I hold the drive shaft from moving, I can turn the prop shaft about 80-85 degrees before feeling resistance on the drive shaft.

This seems excessive for any right angle drive. Is there a spec on this? Should I be concerned? I have never had metal shavings in the lower unit lube.

Thanks for your help!

Completely normal. What you're noticing is the play between the lugs in the clutch dog and the gear lugs. There's a sizable gap between them to allow space for them to engage.

Whew!!

Thanks for the quick reply Chinewalker!!

I'm a maintenance mechanic by trade, but have never attacked a lower unit. I'm glad I can just put the new water pump on and put her back together!
