Replacing non smartcraft tach with smartcraft tach

Is this possibile? My '02 Sundancer has erratic tachs that I will be replacing. The engines are MPI Mercruisers and during a sea trial I noticed that the surveryor could read GPH on his computer. If I replaced my current tachs (not smartcraft) with
Smartcraft will they work?Is the plug to connect it the same? Can I read GPH from the smartcraft screen?
