Need help with Mercury Classic 50. Bought a 16 foot Jon Boat with this motor on it. I took it to the lake and ran it for about 1/8th of a mile, and would start to bogg down and would not plain out any more.it runs fine from idle to half throttle i found the crank trigger was bad (burnt white wire heard this is typical) replaced trigger and stator(brand new) now boat has no hole shot like it had before and moves up to speed real slow but never plains out and motor sounds like it is strugging.even when it had the bad trigger it ran strong for the frist 1/8 mile and from idle to half throttle and now its crap it has new fuel tank and line. all opinion will be appriciated

Re: 86 classic 50

Could be a fuel issue.1st check for strong spark and then for even compression. Then i would be giving carbs a service/rebuild.

Re: 86 classic 50

Id be going for a carb rebuild and clean.Get the kits and do it properly.Replace needle n seats and reset float height to exact spec....most often overlooked resulting in running too lean or too rich.

Re: 86 classic 50

If the fuel pump is weak it will not provide enough full and RPM will be limited to what fuel will flow.

Pump the primer bulb, if it improves speed IMMEDIATELY rebuild the pump as continued running lean WILL melt pistons.

If holeshot is not crisp the carb cleaning is a good idea.

Verify WOT timing as it can be a couple of degrees off with a new part.
