can anyone tell me what exactly does the oil return hose do on my old evinrude?
If the hose was loose fitting or removed, what would be the consequence?

I'm just trying to figure out its function and why some were made with or without it.

Sticking my head out here, since it's been over 30 years since I've been involved with one of those, but to the best of my knowledge it is for recirculating the crankcase drainage for burning. Previous to that, it was simply dumped into the lake.

I heard it lubricates the upper bearing. Not sure, but I always replace that hose if bad..

Agreed, on many motors, there is a hose to oil the upper bearing. But I don't think that is the case here.
