I have a 1984 90hp 2 stroke and would like to change the water pump. I have dropped lots of Merc and Johnyrude lowers but never a Yammie. Is there anything specific you need to do on these, ie, in forward gear, diconnect shift rod etc?

Google: Yamaha Outboard Maintenance Tips Andy...... for detailed instructions with photos for water pumps, and several other repair and maintenance procedures. I did the pump on my 90HP Yamaha a while back and it was fairly easy and straight-forward. The shift rod has splines and slides right off and on. Leave motor control in neutral position and don't move the shifter shaft while it's off, you could mark it with a felt tip pen just to be sure, but no real reson why you'd move it anyway. Take your time, clean and grease(Waterproof Marine) everything for re-assembly. Good Luck!:)
