When setting the W.O.T should the motor be under load (in water)? We seem to be way high with the motor just hooked to hose..

Re: Wot

Absolutely. Never open your engine up all the way with just your hose attached.

Re: Wot

Hi barleyfloatin. Welcome to iboats. What type of motor do you have? Regardless of the make and model you should NEVER, EVER run your motor at WOT on muffs, or in a test tank. It should only be done on the open water, under normal load. Most motors actually have a mechanisms to prevent over revving in neutral, in fact. Also, be sure that your motor is even designed to run on muffs in the first place. Most vintage motors need to be run in a test tank with water filled to an inch or so below the main exhaust port and should never be run on muffs like modern motors.

Re: Wot

If you have an electric start motor the wot timing can be set on many motors using the starter. You first need to ground all the plug wires using a suitable device (CDI Electronics has the correct tool). Once the plug wires are grounded simply crank the motor and advance the timing all the way. Your timing light will show the timing pointer on the marks that indicate where WOT timing is set. Adjust according to the Shop Manual. You can do this with or without the plugs in but taking the plugs out will make it easier on the starter and battery. On most motors, cranking speed should be around 300 rpms. A well charged battery is also a must.
