Hey I am new and I am not sure if this is the right section. I have a 1996 Bass Tracker with a 1989 Evinrude 70 Hp on it. I beieve the steering is frozen and I am guessing the cable is the problem. I see on the cable it shows Teleflex Inc. 809612. I cant seem to locate this cable anywhere. Anyone possibly point me in the right direction on what cable I should need. Thanks

Re: Which steering cable

For about the same price as a cable alone you can purchase a Helm Kit which will include a new Helm as well as a new cable. From the number I believe your cable is 12 feet. Check with your local marine parts supplier (West Marine, etc.) and ask about this. If you unhook the cable from the engine and the engine swings free it is most likely your cable or helm. If the engine does not swing free test your steering the problem may lie in the engine pivot and may just need grease in the zerks on the engine steering bracket or could have frozen/worn bushings. Another problem is the cable rusted/corroded where it passes thry the tilt tube. DO NOT hammer it out as this will flare the end and you will never get it out.
Steering (or any other marine control) cables are NOT grease able and should be replaced if damaged or stiff.
