i used a smoke tester to check for leaks in the oil chambers of the motor. there was a leak from the intake manifold gasket to the side of the head i repaired that, alls good but one thing when i was pressurizing the motor with smoke it started to come out the exhaust and the carb hole(where the carb sits on the manifold i did not have the carb on). i figured it was blowing by the rings because i have not broke in the motor yet, i honed out the cylinders and i'm thinking because the rings have not smoothed out the walls of the cylinders it was blowing threw the scratches from honing
Does this make sense to anyone THANKS

where did you inject the smoke? If in a spark plug hole it will come out every open valve.

no i injected the smoke in the oil fill hole on top of rocker cover so it would only do the oil chambers basiclly checking the gaskets for leaks

On an engine with new rings and freshly honed bores I would expect a small leakage past them, so coming out of the exhaust and intake would make sense, unless it was LOTS coming out...

no there wasn't lots coming out i was surprised how fast the smoke comes out of the smoker machine. when the smoke was coming out the exhaust and intake it was a very slow rise and there wasn't much so that's why i thought of the rings i know it's not the head because i got the head machined and the machinst replace the valve seals also, i hope he did it right. i asked my mechanic who owns the smoker and he said there would be enough pressure build up to pass the rings if you let the smoker pump smoke into the motor long enough to build the pressure up
