Appearing to run well on the hose doesn't mean much, it will run on one cylinder or with the carb plugged up when out of the water.

Start with the basics, first check the plugs and make sure both a firing, then move on to the carb.

How are you checking your spark ??

I pulled plug wire off while it was running and held it close to plug and seen spark. I did this to both plugs looks ok to me.
I am going to look at carb today any suggestion would be helpful.

Thanks

Re: 1988 50hp johnson

Is this a VRO motor? My dad has a VRO 50hp and the fuel side of the pump went. I replaced it and is still messed up. He needs a whole new pump. Its really a crap shoot whether it gets fixed or not by replacing 1 side of the pump. His runs great in the driveway but as soon as the motor gets some resistance on it it will go then bog then take off then bog.

To tell if its the fuel pump have someone pump the primer ball when you are trying to run it with resistance. If it runs good then its def fuel pump.

Hi Chas0218

Not sure what you mean by fuel side but, what happened to your dad is what is happening to me I am going to try to replace the whole pump. I hope this works I need to get on the water.

Thanks
