1983 470 merc 170hp prop question

i only have one prop i want to buy another used one or new one for back up what do the numbers on my prop tell me what it is here are the numbers on prop 48 78122 A40 21P. when i look up props they don't have the same numbers to campare to. i'm assuming the 21P means pitch what do the other numbers mean. as mentioned in the title 1983 470 merc
what was the standard size they use on this motor the gear ratio 1.84:1

Ayuh,... The other numbers are Merc part numbers...

You've got a 21", probably aluminum standard production kinda prop...
470s are proped just like any other boat...

I'll move this to the Prop forum....
I suggest you read the "Read This First" post over there...

i see also 4 blade size can you use a 4 blade on a 470 i know they come with a 3 blade

Yes you can use a 4 blade prop.
We can't help much without the numbers required in "read this first" at the top of the page.
