Re: starter won't stay ingaged

weak starter , weak battery or both. I was getting that often in the bitter cold of winter.... the motor starts to fire...I am guessing the flywheel over comes the starters gears push and forces the gear back down, but ther wasnt enough MOMENTUM to sustain firing.

you could also be missing spark in one or more holes. make sure the motor is primed correctly....

there may be another reason, but your symptoms were the same as mine and I explained how i over came my issues.

hope it works for you

Re: starter won't stay ingaged

On my 87 150hp when it is cold weather I have to advance the out of gear throttle just a touch so that the engine will fire and start, every engine is somewhat different but this is how I have to do it. Good luck

Normally the starter will be kicked out, when the motor fires. I would make sure the motor is choked properly for starting and the throttle is advance properly, and see if it works better. How does it restart after it is warm? Same issue?
