Re: 1969 Johnson 40 hp electric
You are the second one to come along with those funky colors. That can't be the original cable for that motor. The correct colors for the wires at the switch are:
Red: Bat terminal
Black and black, M and M terminals (Or M and G on some switches)
White: S terminal
Two purple wires: "A" terminal
One of the purple wires goes to the choke switch. Other side of choke switch is purple & red stripe going back to the motor
Other purple wire goes to the Hot Light (Or horn). Other side of light is tan going to the motor
If you have a switch with a "C" terminal, you can connect the purple/red to that instead of using a choke switch
If there is a fat brown wire, it is only used if you have a generator kit.
All this assumes you have a motor without electric shift and without a generator accessory kit.
You are going to have to use a multimeter to trace where those funky colors go at the motor end.
M and M go to the magneto (one also connects to the vacuum cut-out switch)
S goes to the starter solenoid (one of the small terminals)
Bat goes to the starter solenoid (same large terminal as the + battery cable)
Are you an electrician? You will be one step closer when you figure this out.
