New to forum and boat restoration. I inherited a fiberglass Bayliner fish/ski boat with completely rotten floor. I have removed all interior and flooring. The glass over plywood structure underneath floor is OK.

My question is this: Is fiberglass used over plywood floor just for waterproofing, or is it necessary for structual integrity of boat? I had been considering other ideas for floor, but needed to know if fiberglass was necessary for structure.

Thanks!

Re: Newbie question about floor replacement

hi ....welcome to iboats.

the glass on the deck is two fold.....first..waterproofing to protect the wood.
second....wear resistance.

the structural part of the boat comes form the glass tabbing the deck to the hull....the deck is rigid....and the tabbing keeps everything form compressing.

here is a link to replacing and re foaming your new deck.

What have you done to ensure that the stringers and transom are good? If the deck is that rotten, it is usually a good indication that they will have some issues. Core sampling them will give you a True understanding of their condition. Looks can be deceiving
