How long do the snap ring pliers have to be to reach the inner snap rings
in a 1983 Evinrude 150 lower unit. Appreciate the info.

Re: snap ring pliers

The big snap ring pliers that I have are as follows: pin diameter is 3/32, pivot point to tip is a little over 3.5in and overall length is 15.5in or so. They are some big snap rings be careful.

Re: snap ring pliers

if you cant find them...( they are unusual, that big) you can buy an extra long set of needle nose pliers and grind down the tips carefully, and it will do the job...strong, easy to find, and cheaper than the "coorect" tool

good luck

PS, I did it...worked great

Re: snap ring pliers

We file down pliers at my job to make snap ring pliers. It can be tedious to do by hand with a file. Sometimes you go through a few pairs before you get it right because if you remove to much material the tip will snap off. Not enough material and they will not bite. We have to shave the sides about 1" up the shaft for our application as well.

I have never done a pair as large as what you need. I wonder if a rotary tool would make short work of notching out the tips??

Last fall I used a rotary tool on some cheap pliers and worked like a champ.

Re: snap ring pliers

You can buy a set of 16" locking snap ring pliers on ebay or amazon for 40 bucks shipped. Actually 2 sets, internal and external, with about 5 sets of extra tips. I just bought a set and they are the right size for the lower unit.
Only drawback is they are made in China and they aren't the best quality, I had to use a screwdriver to coax them out. 16" US pliers are about 80 bucks at my local tool store, if I were to do it again I'd probably buy the good ones.
16" is the right size for locking style, long enough so the locking mechanism stays outside the prop housing.
