1961/66 18HP Johnson. Deflector plate.

I had cause to remove the power head. I am about to reassemble but I have realized that there should be a deflector plate sandwiched between two gaskets at the power head mount. It only has a gasket.Before I go chasing about can anyone tell me the significance of having the deflector plate. In other words how important is it.

It helps to keep some of the corrosive exhaust and steam away from the lower main bearing seal and drive shaft splines, thus helping avoid some of the rust that otherwise occurs. I say "helps" because it isn't an absolute seal. But better than nothing
