I recently bought this boat/motor and I am having a hard time finding the correct parts list. I can not figure out how to come up with the model number. The first two digets of the serial number are also hard to read on the label. The first looks like a 0/O/Q and the second looks like a C/G. after looking at alot of sites, I believe it must be 0G295732, but I cannot figure out the model number. I found a list of 13 model numbers on one site (eg. #1040312SD) . For now I need to know if it has a thermostat and for future, I would like to know the model and a link to a correct parts listing. Thanks for any help you can be. I have many hours in this research already, trying to find it myself.:) Pat

The 0G is for a 6-15hp engine and the OG comes up as a 1990 model 10404120D.

The model you list as 1040312SD dies come up as a 1996:

1040312SD MERCURY 1996 40

However both models share the same parts listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/543.cfm

Service Manual:

http://1manual.com/Mercury manuals/Service Manual PDFs/TwoStroke/814676r1/cover.pdf

You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed to use this manual. If you scroll down to the lower part of the opening page, you will see the various engine components in red. Click on the one you want and when the first page opens, click on the "Save As" icon at the top LH corner of the page and you can save it to your computer.

The model number I gave was just an example of one of the 13 models I found listed on the internet for 1996 40hp. Is their a way to determine which one I have? Also apparently the first two digits of my serial number are not "0G", they must be "0C" instead (they are hard to read). I am almost positive that it is a 1996 and it is a 40hp, 4-cyl, 2-cycle, oil injected motor. That would make the serial number #0C295732. It appears that it may not have a thermostat. If that is the case, how does this motor maintain internal water temperature during Winter and Summer water temps ? Thanks for the fast reply !

Pat;

The 0G is for a 6-15hp engine and the OG comes up as a 1990 model 10404120D, should have read:

The 0G is for a 6-15hp engine and the 0C comes up as a 1990 model 10404120D

The model number is derived from inputting the s/n into a Mercury search engine.

10404120D MERCURY 1990 40

Parts listing and Service Manual are as listed in post #2.

Whether it is winter or summer, water is what controls the engine operating temperature. The thermostat just allows the engine to warm up quicker before introducing cooling water flow. An engine without a thermostat has cooling flow as soon as the impeller is capable of producing flow. In cold weather, an engine like yours should be allowed to well warm up to operating temperature before stomping on the throttle. Takes a little longer but regardless, once a thermostat opens, you basically have both engines the same.
