We had a intermitten clunckin and jerking noise in the outdrive took it in to a boat shop they change the shifting cable ,it was better but still not right, took it back a few months later and they put new gears in it took it too the lake ran good for bout 15min and then a big clunk and now it wont move and with the motor runing sounds like its just clattering not sure if its something they did that went wrong or if something else went in the outdrive i no they have stuck us for 2800 bucks for the labor gears ,cable and a new prop any suggestion would be appriciated thanks

bring it back to the shop that did the repairs

was there a warranty??

its possible that one of the gears had a hairline crack that they missed when the rebuilt it the first time

i know the pinion gears in the lower half of the cobras were prone to that

Re: 88 OMC 5.7 problems in outdrive

if they did do work on the lower half, they most certainly disassembled the drive shaft and pinion nut but that would not hurt the pinion gear

what causes the pinion gear to split is poor quality and hard shifting - the shift cable adjustment is pretty specific on the cobras and can lead to gear failure if not properly maintained over time

the shop should have replaced the pinion gear with a lower gear set if this is the repair they performed

It could also be they re-filled the out drive wrong and the air bubble cratered it.

Just a thought.
