Hi I recently bought a 1985 Sun Ray 17.5 ft boat with a OMC 3.0L motor in it. I an new to boats an know nothing about them. I think the starter needs to be replaced because the motor realy drags when you try to start. The battery is fairly new. An even with the charge in the battery over 13 volts, it still turns over very slow. So I need to know how to remove the starter. I can't see any bolts to remove to get it out. Also how do you move the motor throttle and not put it in gear?

Re: Starter Removal

There should be 2 bolts that are on the bottom of the starter.

You should have a button that you push in at the pivot point of your shifter in the photo for neutral. I see that you have the tilt switches at the top of the shifter, is that another switch just below the tilt toggles? Others are much more knowledgeable so stay tuned.

Re: Starter Removal

If you can find the starter down on the starboard side of the mtr the bolts are on the very bottom of it and face up.

So I need to know how to remove the starter. I can't see any bolts to remove to get it out.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,.... As noted above, it's held on by 2, 3/8" bolts, straight up from below....

Also how do you move the motor throttle and not put it in gear?

I believe you pull out on the lever in neutral to find throttle only....

Re: Starter Removal

Thanks for the quick responce to my questions. Could the bolds be in a harder place to get at. There is a switch under the shifter. If I pull up on it I can move the shifter forward or reverse, but without pulling up on it I can't move it in either direction. I don't want to put too much pressure it for fear of damaging it. Thanks again these answers are a great help. Maybe some day I will be able to answer some questions

I have this same shifter. You pull the whole thing out. There is no switch. Once you pull it out you can push it forward and operate the throttle like a gas pedal in a car.
Does not look like that head was replaced. (From your other post)

Re: Starter Removal

have you had this running?

I'd try several things before pulling the starter off.
-remove outdrive to eliminate seized upper gearbox in outdrive
-clean ground at block where neg battery cable connects
-evaluate engine to make sure it isn't seized (was the oil level over full?)

Re: Starter Removal

Pulling the shifter out worked great thanks. But no I have never had the motor running. The oil is not over filled. It was seized when I got the boat. Put some antiseize into each cylinder and let set 3 days. Then I able to turn the motor over. But it turns over very slow even with a full battery charge. New plugs, points, condenser, cap, and rotor. I looked at some 3.0's on utube and it does't turn over any where near as fast as them.

If there has been any water in the cylinders and set for any time at all the cylinder walls as well as the rings are going to be a bit rusty and could cause what you are referring to.
I am not sure what your "antiseize" solution was but just squirt some 5 weight oil in each cylinder and let that stand a couple days.

Re: Starter Removal

You can also mix up some ATF and Acetone 50/50 and put that in the cyl's.

Re: Starter Removal

Put some 5 wt oil in the cyl did't help. The antiseize that I put into the motor when it was frozen up was a solution of atf and acetone 50/50. So back to starter removal. Is there a way to remove it easy way to remove it. Special tool, get someone else to do it, etc. Thanks for all the help I really needed it.

Ayuh,.... Pull the whole motor 1st, then the starter...

It sounds like it's gotta come out anyways.....
