It is more likely to be one of the condensors located under the magneto flywheel.

Could be, but I would start by dressing the points (filing) and cleaning with acetone, then re gapping to 020

If that checks out, test the coil and also ensure continuity from the coil to plug boot along the plug wire.

Why would you say that?

I have the same problem with my 6 hp. No spark.
Checked everything and found both condensors dead.
They should have a reading of 5000 ohms according to the manual or you should get a spark after putting a batty accross it bur both of mine are dead.

By the way, does anyone know where on the motor I can find the serian no.?
I have just bought this motor as a back-up for my boat.

Thanks

Bob.

Hello Bolton1957. Welcome to iboats. You serial number is probably on the ID tag riveted to the motors transom clamp bracket. The tag usually contains both the model number and a unique serial ID. You can also search for a welch/freeze plug about the size of a US quarter on the power head itself too. If your condensers are bad, no worries they are very cheap and easy to replace and are considered a "consumable" part, along with the points, carb kit and impeller. You can get a tune up kit right here at iboats for about $20 US, which comes with a pair of new points and condensers. I would also recommend replacing the spark plug wires while you're at it. At the very least trim about 1/2" off either end to get to some fresh copper. If you do decide to replace them entirely, be sure you get 7mm COPPER core wires as modern automotive, graphite wires will not work properly. If your local auto parts store doesn't sell it check small engine shops that service lawnmowers and other 2 stroke engines. You can also order it here, or from other sources online. Here's a great link that can walk you through and entire ignition rebuild. It's for a different motor than yours, but uses the same much lover OMC "universal" magneto system. Cheers!

Hi Commander and thanks for all the info, the links are great.
I have seen points and condensers on the site for sale for just a few Dollars but my problem is that I live in Scotland and to post a condenser from the USA I was quoted ?35 Sterling. I did however find a place in England and got a tunning kit for about ?20.
I must say that this site is First Class so keep up the good work and thanks again.

Bob.
