I fish in small (300 acre) Reservoirs. i dont think there are any electronic maps available, would GPS be any benefit to me?
Would i be able to set waypoints or use"mapping" feature for tracking?

Re: Gps

I run on the big reservoirs here in TN and use GPS when I'm not sure of the new area that I'm heading into (mark the dock/marina or locations I'm trying to get to). For my Garmin, I can purchase maps for inland lakes in the SE United States and all of my mapping features would work water borne. I have a Garmin Nuvi 265.

Do you go out at night, at night in a heavy fog it sure can come in handy.

No problem setting waypoints. All its doing is storing a Lat/Long value no matter what it shows onthe map. When I don't have my "lakes chip" in my GPS it shows my Tahoe House dock is on land.

Welcome to iboats!

Don't be so sure at least the outlines of your lakes aren't mapped. I live on an even smaller lake (163 acres) and it's on my lakes map.

Re: Gps

I have a very old Garmin that only has a U.S. highway map. A body of water I fish in Wisconsin has an outline of the the resevoir and rifer systems that feed it. It wouldn't need to be there at all to use for navigation if you marked your waypoints and did track back. First time on this body of water I left a sugar trail down river to the lake. On the way back I told my wife to watch for debris in the river as I was going to use ONLY GPS to navigate the 5.5 miles back up river. Never had to look up. The arrow on the GPS did a hard left when I got 90 degrees to the dock. If you don't use it for naviagation, use it to mark underwater humps, rocks, stumps, ridges, valleys, etc. so you can get back to them.

The U.S. Air Force NAVSTAR GPS is a global system--it works anywhere on the globe. It does not know where you are going to use it, so it will work on a small reservoir lake just as well as on the ocean.
