Hello,

New to site but have been checking out the forum for some time. I have a 20 hp mercury 2 stroke outboard with electric start. Serial number 0A972717. I just picked it up from the shop today. It was idling bad and had a problem with the starter. The mechanic replaced the ignition switch. I took it out today to try it and it ran great until the third time I started it. At that time, a fire started and burned through the wires running to my battery and wires at the ignition switch. I noticed a few areas were the mechanic had nicked some of the wires after looking over the motor after the wires melting. The motor is now idiling rough again and cuts out when I try to give it gas. Any ideas on what wires could be damaged that are causing this? I plan on taking back to mechanic on Monday and will be there as soon as he opens.

Sounds like the switch was wired wrong and the battrey was not getting charged or wouldn't hold a charge very long. Best to take it back to him and ask more questions.
Best of Luck,
