Clutch dog cradle compatibility

I am in the process of rebuilding a lower unit on a Johnson 1975 25hp motor. The motor was slipping out of gear and I have opened up and there is wear on the ears of the clutch dog. While researching the part numbers I noticed that the cradle that I took out of the unit has a different number than the one it is supposed to have. The part number listed for this unit is 302500. The actual part in the unit is 325014. Are these parts compatible? Could this be the cause of the slippage problem?

how loosely did it fit?..if sloppy it could contribute...fwiw...same problem with a 1971 25hp...from advice given here..had both the dog and fwd repaired at a machine shop for $96..problem solved..< only the edges of the mating surface of the gear were damaged..the teeth were perfect >....looking at the price of that cradle 0302500 <$88> vs. the cradle and dog 0390030 <$142>..the combo might be the way to go if you decide to go new. At any rate, again from the knowledge and experience shared on the forum, rarely will only the dog be the cause and fwd gear needs repairing/replacing as well.

The cradle and dog were changed at some point in time. That's why the new number is 390030 for the set. Old and new style parts are not compatable. Sorry, I don't know when the change was made without looking it up. Y'all can do that.

The cradle seems to fit fine with no slop. The part number on the cradle puts it in a motor starting in 1978. As I look closely at the forward gear it looks like it should be replaced as well.:( Looks like I will be trolling e-bay. Thanks for the replies.
