Merc 150 XR6 driveshaft bearing removal?

Hi guys, first post here, so please be kind. Today I pulled my lower unit to change the waterpump and found that the bearing directly below the water pump base on the driveshaft had considerable play. (Oil looked normal when I changed it before the winter, after last use.) Turning the shaft felt like the bearing rollers were flat sided. How do I get into there and change the bearing? Does it involve a tear down of the whole lower unit just to get to the bearing?
Thanks in advance for any help I can get,
Jim

OK. I found the pic of the tool to remove the retainer. My question is: what is in volved once I get the retainer off? Does the shaft pull right out, with a bearing pressed on it, or is there something else holding it? Please anyone?

Jim, A lot of those driveshaft bearings are loose when the waterpump base is removed. Some driveshafts used spring loaded bearing preload pins and others relied on the waterpump base to put them in the right position. I recommend you post back the year and serial number of the motor. Some of the experts can tell you how the bearing is preloaded and you can then determine if it is really bad.

It's a 2000 Merc. XR6 ser. # OT1460XX When I look down in there past the retainer, while turning the shaft, the bearing will only spin when the shaft is shoved to one side against the race. Otherwise it just hovers without touching the race.
Thanks,
Jim

Those gears are designed to pull towards each other under a load thus forcing driveshaft up against bearing race(bearing is upside down). If you pull straight up on driveshaft and turn it it should be smooth.

Whew! What a relief! Thanks alot for the info Faztbullet, that puts my mind at ease. I'll be whistling a tune when I put the lower unit back on in the morning!
Thanks again,
Jim
