1966 Evinrude 6hp Starter Unit

I understand that some OMC see parts are compatiable with different years. Will a '74 Evinrude 6hp (model# 6RL74C) starter unit fit a '66 Evinrude 6hp (model# 6602b)? What years will work with the '66?

HI scouct30. Welcome to iboats. I'm not exactly sure of your compatability, but here are some links to the exploded idagrams and parts lists for the two motors in question. You should be able to use them to cross reference the starter you mentioned.

I'm not 100% sure, But I believe that they are the same.

I bet they are too. Those little guys stayed fairly unchanged for years. If all else fails you can just wrap a rope with a knot in one end around the flywheel a few times and start it that way. Not the most elegant solution, but it works in a pinch.

Thanks guys. This is a great forum. It has been years since I have worked on a small outboard and completely forgot about wrapping some rope around the fly wheel. I did that and she started right up after getting some gas through. Now I just need to order that part and clean the water intake screen and i'll be in business.

sweet. I used a bit of carb cleaner and a small wire brush to clean my water uptake screen and it worked great. Glad you got her running. The ol' rope trick works every time. Even the Big Twin motors of the late 60's had the notch on the top for pull starting in a pinch. The real old, antique outboard all started by using a rope. Check aomci.org for a fellow OMC nut near you Those guys are great and they will often sell/give you parts for super cheap. Happy parts hunting!
