Removal of my 235 hp Evinrude

I need to take off my 235 Evinrude. It's a '79 model, and it doesn't have a lifting ring to take it off. Would it be ok to take the crankshaft nut off and put a lifting ring under the nut? I don't want to mess anything up. Thank for any help.

My only worry is that you might bugger the threads on the crankshaft. How about taking out a top head bolt and using that instead? Or, can you rig up a strap/sling?

Those engines are designed to be lifted by the flywheel. OMC makes a special wheel puller with an eye on top. Pricey and only serves one purpose. You will find that a 3-legged automotive harmonic balancer puller will do the same job. You can probably rent one that will work from a NAPA or Pep boys-any automotive parts place. Thread the 3 bolts into the fine thread bolt holes machined into the top of the flywheel. Make sure you tighten up the huge center bolt of the puller, then put a strap through the puller. You don't need to pull the flywheel nut.
