I purchased a new 6 HP 4-Stroke Mercury in 2008. Did not use until we shipped our boat to the Caribbean several months ago. Have only used the outboard (on a small inflatable dinghy) a few times. If we run the outboard more than a few (~5) minutes, it starts coughing and wants to overheat. Has actually stalled (due to overheating?) a couple of times.

- Cooling water exits as expected.
- Otherwise, the engine runs beautifully.
- Always starts on first or second pull.

What could be causing this issue?

It has been suggested that we should remove the thermostat, since we are using the outboard in a warm climate. Popped the cover off to look for the thermostat. During a very brief cursory look, could not locate it...

Any assistance would be provided. Not sure if we still have warranty coverage, due to the amount of time that has passed since purchasing. Not sure it matters, since we do not have warranty service available in the outboard's current location.

Thank you.

Have you ever replaced the impeller or water pump housing/gaskets?
