Im considering the purchase of a deckboat with this OB mounted on it. Any idea what year this might be from, and if it is rated at the crank or the prop? Thanks!

Don't know. Pic was taken from a Craigslist ad, and the seller has yet to answer the same question.

If he can't give you that info I'd walk away from it.

Based on the cowling being original......late '70s, cant be anymore specific than that without the model number......rated at the flywheel.

That color combination on the cowling is pretty faded. Hard to tell exactly, but that orange, red and grey striping first came out around 1977 and went through at least 1980. The telltale (overboard indicator) first started in 1978. The owner might be able to tell you if it has that indicator. These engines were pretty much the same through those years. The ignition systems are all electronic, but the dual power packs went through a couple of changes during that time. The choke changed from mechanical choke plates to the fuel primer solenoid pump in 1980. Of course you'll want to know what the compression is on each cylinder prior to purchase. That engine's horsepower is rated at the crankshaft. Propshaft ratings started around the 1985/86 timeframe.

Got ahold of the seller last night. He stated that the title of the boat says that its a 1976, but wasn't sure if the OB was original or not. I'm planning on taking a closer look when I have time available, but thanks for the responses so far. I'll be sure to look for a tell-tale.

No such thing as a 175hp in '76.....first year was '77 so the motor is at most that old.

Mark is correct. A 76 Johnson had a green/gold midsection. This one is white.
