I have a question and I know yall are the experts here. Im new to boats and been reading and trying to learn. I was checking out a boat to buy and the guy told me the third cylinder is out and the dealer quoted him 650 to fix. The engine will turn over but it wont start. Does this sound about right or am I looking at a big headache if I buy it.

Its on a 79 Galaxy

That engine should start with one dead cylinder so I suspect that there is more than one problem.

When the seller tells you something (anything really) remember that his goal is to get as much money as he can from your pocket to his. Before you even think about making an offer get a copy of the dealer's written proposal and talk to them. $650.00 could be for a blown head gasket or a bad piston or, or, or - -.

For starters, it isn't a 1979 135hp. It is likely 1973-1976.

If the guy isn't giving you that info correctly...

Post back with far more specifics about the repair.

Compression numbers would also be good place to start.

If it was myself, for the year and model it is, I'd stay away from it. Could be " a can of worms ".

All excellent comments! The compression on that engine when it was shipped from the factory was probably around 130 lbs or more. Ask the dealer to let you see the compresson test when it done by his mechanic. That will tell you a lot about the powerhead.

If you're buying a nearly 40 year old motor and it is known to be blown, then you're buying it for parts - at least that's what you tell the seller. So, basically you factor a couple hundred for the motor into your price for the package. That way you could probably part it out to get your money back should you decide not to rebuild, then use that money towards a newer/fewer issue motor...
