You can find them worldwide, to make the story short : This old boater not knowing a thing about outboards was nearly scammed with a 2006 Tohatsu 40CEF, the problem was excesive fuel flooding entire carb, the mechanic said the repair was costly and probably not worth repairing such an oldie making a low purchase offer.

A friend of mine knowing a little more mechanics and in hope of future not so costly repairs ended buying the engine offering owner a much better deal. At the shop, we found that the main problem was a misaligned butterfly's plunger locking inside solenoid, the butterfly spring poorly lubed had trouble releasing plunger when choque was activated in cold starts while pushing RC key/ push button.

Once main problem was corrected, proceeded to polish WP liner & impeller change, cleaned water passages with high water pressure using a flushing adapter, new thermostat, gasket, spark plugs & LU oil change, complete carb & fuel pump clean, coil plate's, throttle and gear sinc, micro grease on all rotating and sliding parts, the engine is shifting and throttling smooth as butter and WP peeing fiercely like a teen ager.

At 13 hundred bucks that included the engine, RC box, center console, helm and seat and a trailer with a 14" Boston Whaler sitting on top and $ 230.00 for hand labor including hour meter install and small parts, has made the summer purchase of his life...

Watch out for crook mechanics, get second opinions...

Re: Crook Mechanics

They are all over in all types of sevice work.

However not all are bad

Did the eng haft to have all the stuff you did to run properly.
If not to some you or who ever did the work would be a crook for doing things that it did not need to run.

I agree mantinace is real important and it can be costly to do.

Re: Crook Mechanics

This is only one example of crook outboard mechanic, plainly agree you can find them in all types of sevice work. Fortunately for the owner he didn't stepped on the stick. The engine technically speaking was not in a good shape with no service data at all from where to start maintenance, the total service performed will guarantee a trouble free summer & all remaining year operation.

Quality work you would expect done on your engines with plenty of time to do so and best of all, no new owner hurry. We really wanted to make a tech course on that engine as there are very few around here you can lay your hands on.
