If this is a repeat sorry, but I am old so forgive me. I repaired the wires from the trigger. The black is the only one that could be identified, my questionis can the white and tan be identilfied by an ohms reading. Blk to wht = 26.2 Blk to brn = 4.54 and Brn to Wht = 4.8 Photo shows repaired wiring. Thanks

Re: mercury thunderbolt trigger question

Welcome to iboats.

Yup, it is a repeat story ........... older Mercs have wires that fall apart when they get older. :(

Post which yr and motor you are working on and someone will jump in.

Re: mercury thunderbolt trigger question

The motor is a 1970 according to the SN# 3058992. I just need to know which is the wht and which is the brn, hoping some one has a trigger and will ohm it out for me. Thanks

Merc 80hp trigger help PLEASE

Merc 80hp trigger help PLEASE

Need some one to ohm the three trigger wires on a Thunderbolt 800. Just remove the black, white & brown wires and ohm them out so I can figure out which is the white and brown wires. I rewired my trigger and the only wire with insulation was the black one. by the ohm readings I can tell which ones are the white and brown wires. Thanks

Well I have looked at both your posts, number one its amazing that you got all that hard stuff out of the way to get to the bottom of those wires.I have a good 4 cylinder trigger sitting on my desk and I thought I would try and help you out.I am not a pro at using an ohm meter (I just use them to check voltage) anyway setting my ohm meter to 20k no matter how i touched the leads black to black and red to white
or brown etc. I get nothing.Sorry my friend I am not going to be of much help. However I do have a busted trigger I would be willing to dig into and out of curiosity see what wires go where.Tell me how you got that crap out of there without damaging the rest.

Re: Merc 80hp trigger help PLEASE

VERY CAREFULLY!! HEHEHE I used my Dremel tool with a VERY small ginder bit and took it slow. If you want I'll pay you for the busted trigger if it still has the black, white and brn wires on it. I'm frustrated as this is the last problem to deal with before tring to start the motor. Look at the pic I posted and you will see the brown coil beneath the black (blue in pic) filler. I started at the wires and cut down along the wires till I got to the posts and then removed the loose filler. I rewired with what I thought was the right color on each post. I just want to be sure I got it right. I'll be out for awhile but you can call me at "home phone" or E-mail me at Thanks for any help you can give me.
