I have an 88 OMC Cobra and the trim sender arm is never contacting the outdrive or whatever is supposed to be moving the arm and triggering the sensor. I can move the arm manually and the sendor works sending signals to the gage that works correctly. However, as if I run the trim the outdrive never contacts the arm. I purchased a new sender assembly, installed it and the same issue exists. At this point, I'm guessing there is a part that should be attached to the outdrive that would contact the arm. Is this correct? If so, can someone point me to the part number and a diagram that shows it? I haven't been able to find one... If this is not correct, what am I missing? It seems like an fairly simple design...

I purchased the boat a few months ago and this issue existed at that time. I have no idea when the problem developed.

Thanks!

There is not supposed to be a part on the outdrive.

My sensor arm only contacts the drive when it's halfway down or more.

Post a picture of what you've got and we may be able to give a better diagnosis.

I can't post the pic because it isn't in a format to host it. You can check out the link I've posted to see it. It is just a parts diagram picture.

Thank you for all the input. According to the diagram it seems like the sender is installed correctly. See attached pictures. This is with the outdrive down as far as i can lower it on the trailer with the wheel turned hard to port. its hard to see but the outdrive has not yet touched the sensor arm. This is with the drive down 90% or more of the way.

Also, i purchsed a new sender assembly and mounted it without rerunning the wires. it has the same issue with the outdrive never reaching the arm. it's almost as if the arm is too short, the outdrive is mounted too far away or something is missing....

Any help you can provide would be great!

Thanks!

I don't what to tell you. It seems almost like there is a different casing or setup needed.

Agreed... I'm having trouble finding a diagram that shows the upper portion of the stern drive casing. The only way this sending unit would work is if there is something attached to that housing to extend it several inches. originally i thought maybe the sender needed a longer arm and someone had installed the wrong unit. however, i ordered what is supposed to be the right unit and it's exactly the same....

thank you for your input on this.

It looks like in the parts breakdown picture that the arm is attached with a nut.

If it is can you move it so it contacts the outdrive case? #'s 88 and 87

Show a picture how the lever contacts the drive when the drive is down. Been awhile since I had my Cobra but I think the gauge is only operating for trimming in a running tilt configuration and not for when the drive is fully tilted up. In other words the gauge is telling you the trim location for the first 20 degrees or so of travel from full down and anything above that shows full tilt.

azsooner - I'm having the exact problem with an 86 Cobra. the sensor and arm are correct for the outdrive. did you ever get it figured out? thanks.

Op hasn't been around since JANUARY. Doubt he is coming back.
