Mercury 2002 225 optimax Voltage problem

Recently voltage gage running around 17, boat running great. Is this a bad voltage regulator or can it be something else. Thanks so much for the replies

Verify the reading with a hand held voltmeter attached directly at the battery. The dash gauge calibration my have changed but these gauges are not highly accurate. But yes -- the regulator could be bad as well.

The belt driven alternator could have a problem or the battery has a cell failing....
