How do I drop the leg on a 70hp 1998 Evinrude

Hi, trying to drop the leg to change the water pump but am totally stuck. Cant work out where to disengage the linkage? Any help would be AWSOME!!! as its day 3 of driving me crazy.

Not completely sure on yours but look under the carbs at the front of the engine, there should be a small D shaped peice with a bolt on the starter side, you need to remove that bolt, it is an 11mm, and that should free the shift rod, if not there is an access panel somewhere on the side of the leg.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST then remove the starter, it makes it alot easier to get to the bolt and you will need a long extension and a swivel, if you put a single wrap of eletrical tape on the swivel it will make it easier to get on the bolt without it flopping around and when you go to reinstall the bolt put a peice of masking tape on the head then put the head in the socket, it will keep it from falling out.

There are generally 6 bolts, the 4 obvious ones, 1 in the tab an 1 just in front of it, good luck and let us know how it comes out.

I have a 1998 40 hp and 5150abf is correct if its like mine, then its just under the carbs. I had the same problem when i was disassembling my engine. one note though dont get it to tight when you put it back together. Otherwise it will be harder than woodpecker lips trying to shift in and out of gear.

Disconnect the shift linkage on the stbd side of the mtr and check the arm that goes to the upper shift linkage from the g/c. You will find a cir clip on that arm, remove it and slide the arm to port. This will disconnect the linkage.

Like was said, you need to remove the circlip on the shift arm. I found it much easier to disconnect some other linkage too, since it's buried in there pretty good and it's hard to maneuver with everything in the way.
