I am looking some advice on the right pinion gear for my 1983 5.7 OMC Stringer engine. my lower pinion gear snapped in half and didnt damage the foward or reverse gear but left me stranded on the lake the other day. I am having a hard time finding a replacement at my local marinas. They are taking their sweet time winterizing boats. I have found many on ebay and other websites but I am not sure what is the right one. what I am looking for is some help with possibly a model number that is current and findable. Or if anyone has one to sell. Its the mechanical shift as well. Any help and advice is greatly apreciated.!

0383141 FORWARD GEAR & PINION GEAR SET

the pinion and FWD gear come as a matched set. don't mess around with used or aftermarket, as the set is available brand new, at any Evinrude dealer for $51

Thanks for responding. Howard I can not locate the right pinion gear set since I do not know the part numbers. Also every where I look the set is more like 800 dollars.

Re: 1983 OMC stringer 800 question!!

I suspect there is a problem with that part number actually

some sites show it as a brush for an electric motor

others show it as a gear set, but only for 1983.... which is weird. why not 1984 1985...

when I check 1984 lower unit, it says "0983141 FORWARD GEAR & PINION GEAR SET. Use part number 435020 for outboards, sea drives and stringer S.D. Use part number 986980 for OMC cobra"

so 435020 is probably the part and the price is certainly more than $50 unfortunately, but there is a GLM aftermarket available according to most sites - probably available here at iboats too

I know this is an old message, but the EXACT part number for that set is: 983141 for lower unit OMC 800 stringer pinion and forward gear set. I have replaced both myself on my outdrive.
