1974 Reinell 302 mercury 888

I purchased a well taken care of 1974 Reinell. It was garaged, but the outdrive must not have been well maintained. I am wondering why the motor starts but when I place it in gear it kills the motor? Any help would be great.

I agree with Don, the most likely cause is a binding lower shift cable,...

The other point I'll make is,...
Mercury builds Outboard motors....
Mercruiser builds I/Os...

You do Not have a Mercury...
