looking for help!!
bought a boat with a johnson 40HP outboard and need to identify year built so I can buy parts and insure. cannot find model no. after looking at many websites. This is all ive got to work from.
189831 (suspected serial no. on mounting)
23DO1 ? also on mounting
G2981186 (found on top of engine block pressed into silver circle)
Please help new at this game.

Well, we can best help you, if you posted a pic of your gem. The model number is usually mounted on the transome brackets.

That G2981186 is the serial number. Now all you need is a list of serial numbers when built. It has been reported that Evinrude dealers have such a list. Or go to http://shop.evinrude.com/ and click the "contact us" tab.

EDIT: I have a list that suggests it is a 1968 or 1969, but I have a feeling that is not correct. Does your motor have through-the-propeller exhaust? If not, my list is correct. But if it does have prop exhaust, it is considerably newer than that.
