I own a 2002 2-stroke 250 hp yamaha. Yesterday while fishing the Louisiana marsh I noted that whenever i hit the engine trim switch that the power to my GPS/CHARTPLOTTER would go off the air. i then noticed that the volt meter was indicating 10 volts. We headed bach to the launch and the volt meter indicated 8 volts which isthe lowest number on the gauge) when we arrived. The electrical power available was so low that the engine trim would not operate with the engine running. I put the battery on charge overnight (2 amps) and it took 21 hours to go from 9 amps down to 2 amps. I then put a load tester on the battery and it held it's voltage. Any thoughts on voltage regulator/stator and how i should proceed from here and test them out. My mechanic is taking a vacation till Jan 2nd and I would like to fish. Thanks again and hope you all have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A VERY HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR. ****

Re: yamaha electrical

If you have the proper test equipment( peak reading voltmeter) and service manual for your motor,
Test output of lighting coil and the regulator and compare to specs in manual, sounds like one or both of them are bad
