1976 Evinrude 2 hp, No forward, Only Reverse

I just purchased a 1976 Evinrude 2 hp. This motor only has one gear, forward. In order to go in reverse you must turn the motor head around. With my "new" motor, if the flywheel is going clockwise, the propeller is going counterclockwise (or in reverse). I feel like I am losing my mind as it seems if I want to go forward I must turn the motor head around so it is pointing backward. I have taken the lower unit off to replace the impeller. If I rotate the driveshaft clockwise the propeller goes counterclockwise. What am I missing? Thanks.

The prop on the direct drive Evinrude 2hp models is SUPPOSED to turn counterclockwise...

you have a left handed prop, or the prop is installed backwards?

You are in the southern hemisphere with a northern hemisphere motor (coriollis effect)?

Thanks for clarifying this. It now makes sense. I am in in Minnesota (it's December) so I haven't had a chance to put this motor in the water. Now that I look carefully at the fins on the propeller I can see they are slanted in the opposite direction from my other motors.
