Are you sure you got all the bolts? There's some from the inside of the housing as well as from underneath it.

Re: HELP lower unit remove

Is there a bolt holding the shift linkage together? They are hard to see, and sometimes hard to get to. The shift rod has to come apart, and then the L/U will come right down. Thats how all of my Johnsons have been.

Re: HELP lower unit remove

It's electric shift. No shift rod.

1. Disconnect the shift wires by the powerhead exhaust cover.

2. Remove the rear lower motor cover and rear exhaust housing cover as a unit. Remove the clamp holding the shift wires below the thermostat.

3. Remove the six nuts holding the gearcase to the extension housing, and the two bolts holding the extension housing to the exhaust housing.

4. The gearcase and extension housing should now come down as a unit.

To be honest, I don't remember if there is anything else to deal with concerning the shift wires. Take a good look and use common sense. I can't remember everything.
