i have an 83 johnson 35hp j35elcts i purchased a lower unit i was told would fit on ebay said 20 25 35 lower unit. it was a short shaft so i swapped shafts. it seems that the top of the driveshaft is the whole way up and bottom whole way down but roughly 1.5 inches from fitting snug is there a trick or just wrong one ? it is the correct one as in it has the are for the shift rod with the screen and black plastic lock. the notched area in shaft sticks up above the pump. thank you

They changed things around with the gears quite a bit in that series. If you look, I'll be you'll see that the bottom end splines are different between the two shafts. Some of the gears had a longer bearing surface - I don't recall which were used where.... You'd need to get a short driveshaft that matches up the bottom splines with the one that came with the unit.
