Re: Johnson Ocean Pro 90 overheat
one reason Ill never run a boat with out temperature guages, and a water pressure guage.
I dont trust those alarms.... yesterday I was running my ocean runner 115 at 4500 rpm...running like a top and the guages readong 110 on both heads....and the over heat alarm went off. The light came on and the alarm rang for about 10 seconds, then went off...the light stayed on....motor kept running like a top...but I knew i got funky alarms all the time... when i idle down i see the temp rise...but once i put 20 PSI to the motor in water pressure the temps drop like a rock...
this year is the first year the alarm has been going off while running.....usually i get the alarm exactly 2 minutes after i start the motor, and it shuts off exactly 10 seconds later...happnes 100% of the time...but it has corelation to my actual temps....so i supect bad sensors
in any case my point being..SEEING, and KNOWING ....EXACTLY what the temps are in your heads, is what can save your motor..
i had water pump-pressure issues this summer....temps ran up to 180 and almost 200 pretty fast...no alarms went off...but I shut the motor down!! I chose to not let it run that hot...
i think i saved my motor..... when i see the temps rise.. I dont have to know the reason, but at least i can shut the motor off....and not destroy it.once i got mud and algae sucked up in the water pump and got no water cooling...i saw the temps spike and I shut it down and went back and cleaned it out.......dont wait for maybe if the alarm goes off.....and even if it does, you got too hot already!!
now you have to worry if you damaged a piston....or the rings or the bore.... if a piston gets too hot it can warp and start slapping the cylinder walls...i bought a motor like that once.
check out what damage you might have and check out what wasnt working....you got oil? you got water pressure? you got a clogged water passage?? find out
good luck
