1957 Fastwin Question

Hello Gents,

I am eyeing a 1957 18hp fastwin for my 1958 12' Crestliner Commander. However, it is not an electric start model. Can any of you tell me if this motor can be converted to electric start? I am thinking that I can buy a donor electric start powerhead and transplant the parts to my motor. Will this work?

Does the cowl have enough clearance to accommodate the starter?

Thanks in advance.

Re: 1957 Fastwin Question

If you have a chance to get a '57 Fastwin, I say don't pass it up. Those are some of the best motors ever built. Yes they are adaptable for electric starting. If you do get a starter for it, I suggest that you get the bracket for that year of motor, because it does have a cowl mounting on it. I once had a 12' crestliner and they're pretty neat little boats. Yours might be better with a 7.5 or 10hp though, unless it is a fiberglass boat.

They are great engines but an 18 sounds like it's overpowered for a 12'er but I don't know that model. What is the boat rated for?
