Hi, I'm looking at a Wellcraft 270 (2001) and I saw the comment noted below. Has anyone else experienced this problem??

Any other comments would be welcome on the I/O version with the Volvo 7.4 engine>

Thx!

2001 Wellcraft 270 Coastal Engine question

Hi, I'm looking at the above boat to purchase and saw this comment on an owner review. The boat has a Volvo 7.4L inboard/outboard. And I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has the similar package with any comments.

Construction: A tough boat but did have some stress cracking at the stern. Design flaw with the I/O version (the one I have). Engine compartment cover allows sea mist to enter engine compartment causing rust on everything inside.

Handling: Boat handles like a dream. Wide beam-stable ride. You stay high and dry even in 4-5 foot seas. Top speed with I/O around 50 mph.

Engine Room: Volvo-Penta a great engine but with the rusting problem had to replace 6 starters in 8 months. Extended warrenty no help. Volvo Reps came and looked at the problem and determined it was the design flaw. (Wellcraft's Problem) not theirs.

Any thoughts?

Thx a lot!
Paul

I think you have answered most of your own questions Paul.

"A tough boat but did have some stress cracking at the stern. Design flaw with the I/O version (the one I have). Engine compartment cover allows sea mist to enter engine compartment causing rust on everything inside."

That's a walk away for me. A boat this age shouldn't need this kind of re-work. 6 starters in 8 months???

IMHO - 10ft beam and a single engine.....no way. Should be twins. Minimum 4.3 but my preference would be 5.7 Mercs, but looking at the transom design, that wouldn't be possible. Just not a fan of Volvo`s

had the best idea in that a boat like that should have twin OB`s in around the 225 size. Enough power to get you out of trouble when the weather turns rough. Just my opinion though.:D

Ayuh,.... Unless yer buyin' this barge Dirt Cheap, 'n have a Plan to fix the inherit design flaw, 'n repower it with a full driveline,...

That quote is enough for Me to keep walkin',....
