First post 1996 175 Ocean Pro

Hello everyone!
I recently traded one of my Harley's for a 1996 Hydra Sports Ocean Skiff. Its powered with a 96 175 Ocean Pro. I know it sat for a while. I took it out for the first time this past weekend. It would run well for 2 to 4 mins on WOT. But it would then slow to crawl or drop RPM's to like some type of middle gear. It will also only idle for so long, spits a bit, and then stops, but fires right back up again.
I pulled the air cleaner off the front and watched it run while it was on the water at speed, I noticed on all the carbs, it had a white, milky looking , liquid on the boot of the carb. Like water?

I would love to hear suggestions as to where to go next. I would want to prevent unneeded work. The boat and motor only have 65 hours on it.
My first thought was to somehow drain the gas tank, lord knows where or how to do that. I have not change the fuel filter yet. guess that might be next.

Chip, It sounds like it could be lack of fuel. Does the primer bulb get sucked flat? If so, the fuel tank vent is likely clogged or the antisiphon valve is partially clogged. If you have a filter between the tank and hte primer bulb it may be clogged.

If you pump the primer bulb, does the motor stay running at WOT? If so, look for air leaks in the fuel line.

Hate to be a scare monger but your saying that it has sat for a while immediately sets the alarms off. If you want to risk blowing the motor then run it. Almost certain that the carbs need cleaning and rebuilding. The fuel in the tank will need draining and replacing with fresh. The lower unit oil and the impeller will need replacing. It would also be wise to check the oiling system for oil flow.
Check the tightness of the intake and carb bolts. If these get loose you will be running lean and burn the motor up.

James, I pumped it while it was slowing down and it did not recover. I plan to change the filter next and replace the bulb. Would you happen to know why the choke soliniod has what looks like a air nozzle on it? Thanks for the reply.

Chris1956, thanks for the advise, I will check the carbs, the motor performed well when it did run. It was used once a year and has new lines, hoses, etc. It feels like a good solid once over will be in order. I tend to get in a rush, but, I do have all winter to mess with it.

Not really sure what the main purpose of the schrader valve is but I use it to run in my OMC de-carb (engine tuner) there should also be a red valve where you can manually operate the primer

I have thought about it, and rather than muddle through this and hope I get it all correct, I am going take her in and have it gone over. I dont want to worried about what I may have missed. Thanks for the replies everyone.

Schrader valve is for fogging the motor, or injecting a decarbonizer.
