Thank you. My first visit. I have no idea what im doing. I just need to know how to remove the foot from my 1988 50 hp johnson. I have all the bolts out. it dropped about 1 inch. I am told I need to disconnect the shift rod. I am trying to learn how to access the shift rod.

Well, I'm not sure what model motor you're working on. This link here will provide you with a parts breakdown and you'll be able to see the shift rod set up. From what I have seen, it looks as though it disconnects up above, where the powerhead is.

Re: removing foot

On the starboard side of the engine towrds the front you see a small hitch pin through the horizontal shift linkage, pull this pin out, the push the link to the port side, this will release the verticle shift rod. Remove the rest of your bolts to the lower unit and it will slide out. When putting back together removing the starter will gain some access.
